Who we are

About Greater Pentecostal Temple

We are a Spirit-filled Apostolic Pentecostal church committed to loving God, lifting people, and serving Kansas City from the inside out.

Mission Statement

Building our city from the inside out—loving God, lifting people, living Spirit-filled.

At Greater Pentecostal Temple, worship, discipleship, fellowship, leadership, and service are not slogans. They are the work of a church family seeking to demonstrate God’s love, preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, strengthen believers, call people to repentance, and serve practical needs in the community.

“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ…”

Acts 2:38

Statement of faith

What we believe

Scripture

We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God, written by holy men as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

God

We believe there is one God: eternal, infinite in power, holy in nature, and perfect in purpose.

God’s self-revelation

We believe God has revealed Himself as Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit in His abiding presence.

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is fully human and fully divine: God manifest in the flesh and the eternal Father made visible.

Salvation & the New Birth

We teach repentance, water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Spirit-filled life

We encourage believers to pursue holiness, Christian character, spiritual growth, and faithful service.

Our history

A legacy in Kansas City, Kansas

The first gathering was held in 1937 in the home of Versie and Lula Hornbeak. From that beginning, the church grew through Apostolic preaching, Spirit-filled worship, and faithful leadership.

In 1938 the congregation moved to 248 N. Mill Street. As the ministry continued to grow, a new building effort began at 864 Splitlog Avenue, with groundbreaking in 1952 and dedication in 1955.

Pastor Lula I. Hornbeak’s leadership shaped the early life of the church. In 1976, Elder Marvin E. Donaldson was appointed Co-Pastor. After Pastor Hornbeak’s passing in 1978, Elder Donaldson became pastor and was installed later that year.

The church incorporated in Kansas in 1982, expanded ministries and discipleship classes, broke ground for continued growth in 1983, and completed a major sanctuary expansion in 1993. Today, Greater Pentecostal Temple continues the work of “Taking the City” through worship, discipleship, and service.
